Tolerable Distance
If I do my job right, each day the space where I end and you begin widens.
In trying to decide which poem I should send out to you all today, I searched my book, The Size of Your Joy, for the word “august.” I’d totally forgotten about this poem until now, and reading it again feels like I've stepped back in time. I wrote this one only a year ago, but gosh it already feels like a lifetime. This is a poem about those pivotal moments in motherhood that hit you straight in the tender heart—the moments when you see your baby growing up in real time and realize that you’ll spend the rest of your life missing this precious and oh-so-temporary version of them.
Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read this poem. If you enjoyed it, let me know by dropping a comment or sharing it. Your support means the absolute world to me. :)
P.S. If you haven’t yet, my debut collection The Size of Your Joy is available anywhere books are sold. Today’s featured poem, You Do Not Have To, is from my book on page 104. :)
